Perceived impact of massive open online courses in the development of ICT skills among university students

While different schools are addressing these challenges in different ways, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), a relatively new technology, is increasingly being examined as a way to give higher education to a large number of individuals at potentially cheaper rates. MOOCs play a critical role in the development of skills and abilities in a variety of study fields. The extent to which these skills and competencies are acquired is determined by the learner's effective interactions with the knowledge found within the system. This is, however, tied to connectivism, the theory of the digital era, also reviewed in this study. This study, therefore, ascertained the perceived impact of MOOCs in the development of ICT skills among University students Materials and Methods: A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The instrument for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire that was administered to a random sample of 370 university respondents. Results: The finding showed that MOOCs can improve students processing skills and competencies in Microsoft Word and Excel, internet surfing for study materials, forum discussions on social media, emailing, and downloading/ uploading files online. It is also found that MOOCs have less impact in facilitating students' skills in Web design and development, use of digital cameras, MATLAB, GIS applications, statistical and qualitative data analysis software, graphics, textual or image processing software, etc. Conclusion: MOOCs are recommended as a pedagogical tool for people of all ages, especially the busy and working-class, because of its capacity to expose learners to digital literacy skills and lifelong learning opportunities.Item type | Current location | Call number | Status | Date due | Barcode | Item holds |
